Hello Sports Fans,
Book 45: Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town (9/10)
Premise: The story of several rape victims and rape culture in a small college town with a avid following for the local college football team.
This is Jon Krakauer again (see Under the Banner of Heaven if you need a reminder). This time he's writing about the rape culture in a small town in Montana. And I'm going to keep this short. This story talks a lot about rape. It talks about how the victims are shamed. How people don't believe them. How many of them just want to forget about it and never report the crime. The easiest way to disprove a rape case with only 2 witness's (the victim and the perpetrator) is to destroy the victims character.
If you end up reading this book (it's difficult but worth it), you'll follow several young woman in Missoula who have been raped. You'll hear first hand (from audio recording, transcripts, and interviews) what they went through, what it costs them, and the results in the end. This story not only talks about how the legal system handles this, but also how the college, often times looking at expelling their star football players, handle these proceedings as well.
So stay safe, speak up, and stand up for what you know is the truth.
and remember dear readers, Stay Vivid.
