Fuzz - 10/2/2021

Hello Animal Lovers, Book 46: Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law (9.5/10) Premise: What do humans do when animals invade their houses, swarm their airports, or jaywalk? Mary Roach is one of my favorite authors, and for good reason. She investigates things that most people rarely think about. What happens to our bodies after we die? What happens to Humans when they go to war? The Science of Tattoos.... And a host of other topics.  This books dives into how humans cohabitate with nature that we don't necessarily want around. Not bed bugs and cockroaches, but bears in cities, moose on the roads, monkeys swarming cities, and rats in the Vatican.  Usually on location Mary talks about spending a few days living the life of the people who are dealing with these problems and working with them or talking about them about how this will progress in the future.  Without a play by play it's pretty hard to summarize this book since she jumps from topic to topic and animal to animal...

Missoula - 10/2/2021

Hello Sports Fans,  Book 45: Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town (9/10) Premise: The story of several rape victims and rape culture in a small college town with a avid following for the local college football team.  This is Jon Krakauer again (see Under the Banner of Heaven if you need a reminder). This time he's writing about the rape culture in a small town in Montana. And I'm going to keep this short. This story talks a lot about rape. It talks about how the victims are shamed. How people don't believe them. How many of them just want to forget about it and never report the crime. The easiest way to disprove a rape case with only 2 witness's (the victim and the perpetrator) is to destroy the victims character.  If you end up reading this book (it's difficult but worth it), you'll follow several young woman in Missoula who have been raped. You'll hear first hand (from audio recording, transcripts, and interviews) what they went through...

Hello Internet Sleuths, Book 43: A Tangled Web (8/10) Premise: A woman uses new technology to terrorize a man and every woman he was dating.  2012, many technologies are still rapidly changing, while we're past the .com boom, technology is emerging fast. Even today, people have extremely widely different amounts of tech knowledge, but with it emerging so quickly and becoming available for free many people struggled or just didn't bother keeping up.  That brings us to our story. A true story. A shorter review because it's a simple story, but the details make it a thrilling read. Cari, single mother, goes on a few dates with Dave. Cari disappears, Dave didn't want anything serious so while he's concerned. He isn't stressing over the fact that a women he's been on a few dates with has gone missing.  Enter Liz....

Under the Banner of Heaven - 9/1/21

Hello Faithful Readers,  Book 43: Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith Premise: The history and modern life of the Mormon church. This book does focus mostly on extremists, but does talk about Mormon towns and their lives.  When you think Mormon you may think Utah, young boys in white shirts and black ties trying to talk to you about their faith, or maybe even polygamy. But there is an undercurrent that we often don't hear about. Isolation, child brides, murder and more, all in the name of god. This book does focus heavily on the more extremist offshoots. But these offshoots may become more and more common since Mormonism is the fastest growing religion in North America. Author Jon Krakauer (Known for Into Thin Air and Into the Wild ) holds to punches when writing about the Mormon church.* The book revolves around a double murder committed by two Mormon extremists who use "god told us to do it" as their reasoning and excuse.  It deep dived into some ...
