A Tangled Web - 10/02/2021

 Hello Internet Sleuths,

Book 43: A Tangled Web (8/10)

Premise: A woman uses new technology to terrorize a man and every woman he was dating.

2012, many technologies are still rapidly changing, while we're past the .com boom, technology is emerging fast. Apps like Instagram, snapchat, and vine are just taking off. Smart phones are becoming much more popular, but flip phones are still a very common sight. Even today, people have extremely widely different amounts of tech knowledge, but with it emerging so quickly and becoming available for free many people struggled or just didn't bother keeping up.

That brings us to our story. A true story. A shorter review because it's a simple story, but the details make it a thrilling read. Cari, single mother, goes on a few dates with Dave. Cari disappears, Dave didn't want anything serious so while he's concerned. He isn't stressing over the fact that a women he's been on a few dates with has gone missing.

Enter Liz. Liz has also gone on a few dates with Dave and is obsessed. She doesn't like that Dave doesn't want to settle down and uses psychological, emotional, and technological manipulation to try to get as much time with him as possible.

Throughout this book thousands of emails and texts are sent from Cari's phone (the missing woman) to Cari's mother, Dave, Liz, and basically any girl Dave goes on a date with. It appears Cari is obsessed with Dave and doesn't want anyone (including Liz) to see him. Almost as if he is under constant surveillance. This scares many woman off from dating Dave, all except Liz who is constantly by his side.

Eventually it comes out that Liz was scheduling texts and emails, spying on Dave, and was responsible for the disappearance of Cari.  Creating years of uncertainty if Cari was still alive, pretending to be her. Like I said in the beginning, it's all in the details. The texts, how people felt, etc. I feel like this is one of the best modern crime stories I have yet to read and I would suggest it to any crime buff. You'll be screaming from the outside how obvious it all seems. But with the blinders of reality on, and without the full story from multiple angles, it's easy to see how these people were tricked for so long.

So don't believe everything you read online.

and remember dear readers, Stay Vivid.
